Character

Who dances it: Couples

Kozani's best-known dance, a face-to-face dance for couples, usually a man and a woman. Tradition explains the name ('eleven') in two ways: either from its eleven steps, or because it was the last dance of the evening before 11 p.m., when Christians were barred from gathering under Ottoman rule. It is still danced at the town's celebrations and carnival.
