Thracian music is built on the gaida bagpipe, the Thracian lyra, the kaval flute, the daouli and the toumbeleki, joined later by clarinet and accordion. The dances are lively and bouncy, with small, quick steps and bent knees; most are danced in an open circle with the men in front and the women following, often holding each other's belts, as in the zonaradikos. Many dances belong to the wedding, such as the syngathistos, the mantilatos, the tapeinos and the gikna.
