Character

Who dances it: Everyone

The butchers' dance of Constantinople; tradition says it began as a battle mime of the butchers' guild, called 'makellarikos' in Byzantine times. It has a slow form (heavy hasapiko, in 4/4) and a fast form (in 2/4), and the hasaposerviko grew out of it. Through rebetiko it spread across Greece and became the basis of the sirtaki.
