Character

Who dances it: Everyone

The dance of Ikaria and the heart of its village festivals, where young and old dance it in a circle until dawn. The traditional ikariotikos is slow and instrumental, in 2/4, and strings together local tunes such as the tsamourikos, rachiotikos, peramaritikos and "Sympethera"; every village and every musician has their own version. It was once played on lyra and tsampouna (tsampounofylaka), today on violin, laouto and guitar. The well-known song "My love in Ikaria" is faster and rarely heard at the island's own festivals.
