Character

Who dances it: Everyone

The most widely danced Cretan dance today. It probably took shape in the mid-18th century in Kissamos, Chania, and spread across the island between the wars. It is measured and elegant, played on lyra or violin with laouto, often with mantinades sung over it. Dancers ask for the tunes by name, such as "Protos", "Seliniotiko" or "Enantio".
