Rhythm

Formation
Open circle, traditionally men's; the leader holds a handkerchief with the second dancer.

Character

Who dances it: Men

A proud dance in 3/4 in which the leader, holding a handkerchief with the second dancer, performs leaps, turns and slaps. Its origin is debated: the name points to Tsamouria (Chameria) in Epirus, but the musicologist Samuel Baud-Bovy noted that it was not danced by the Chams, and today it is identified mostly with Roumeli and the Peloponnese. In Epirus, especially around Ioannina and Thesprotia, it is danced more slowly. It is associated with the klefts and the War of Independence of 1821.
