1 Chemise Embroidered at the cuffs, neck, hem and along the sleeve seams, with a row of tassels at the hem. Festive ones have more embroidery and longer tassels. 2 Saya A sleeveless garment open at the front, pleated at the sides, with cord embroidery at the hem. Two were once worn, one over the other. 3 Kavadi A dark red garment with elbow-length sleeves and gold braid, worn under the saya. Its gold-worked sleeves were so admired that other villages sewed them on separately. 4 Yileki A short vest, almost to the waist, covered in cordwork except for a panel at the back. Its embroidery is the work of the terzides, the specialist tailors. 5 Apron Trapezoid, in three parts: the amboli at the top, the main panel with its centre (mana) and two sides (loxes), and the posta below. The festive one is covered in cord embroidery; a silk under-apron may go beneath it. 6 Belt Once woven, with cordwork and a large metal buckle; today all metal. 7 Kerchief Folded in two and wrapped round the braids, with the embroidered corner hanging behind. A chain of coins hangs at the front and the kopitsa ornament at the back. 8 Socks and kordelia White knitted knee socks with red toes and heels; the kordelia are black laced leather shoes.
Costume Women’s
Occasion Festive The women's costume of the Karagouni, the farmers of the western Thessalian plain, one of the most complex in Greece. Around Sofades and Palamas the summer festive costume has a dark red kavadi with gold braid under the saya. Over it go the yileki, covered in cordwork, and the richly cord-embroidered apron, found in no other Greek costume.
