1 Chemise White, with stripes and patterns on the sleeves, round the neck and at the hem. By custom the father-in-law provided the thread and wool. 2 Tsoukna A black dress of thick woollen cloth, embroidered with sequins and coloured cotton and silk threads. The five ribbons down the back were for unmarried and newly married women. 3 Korfoulithres Two openings in the front of the tsoukna, which by tradition made nursing easier. 4 Zapratsa A loom-woven woollen apron in many colours and patterns. 5 Belt with the korona A heavy gilded copper belt of linked plates. Its buckle, the korona, is enamelled and set with red and green stones and a double-headed eagle. It was an engagement gift. 6 Barboula A kerchief with colourful patterns, yellow for young women and darker for older ones. Its ends fall over the shoulders, and it is pinned with artificial flowers or jewellery. 7 Socks and footwear Thick woollen socks and woven footwear.
Costume Women’s
Occasion Festive The costume of young women from Metaxades in Evros, one of the most colourful in Thrace. Over the embroidered chemise goes the black woollen tsoukna, with sequins, coloured embroidery and five silk ribbons down the back, the mark of an unmarried or newly married woman. From their engagement until their first children, young women also wore the heavy belt with the korona.
