1 Chemise White hemstitch and crochet at the hem; black cross-stitch on the sleeves, with black braid at the ends. 2 Foustani A pleated wrap skirt fastened at the side, made of two loom widths. The pleats are set with hot water and drying in the sun. In Thrace it is trimmed with ribbons and braid. 3 Polkaki A straight waist-length vest hooked shut at the front, covered with cordwork. 4 Tzamantani A second, longer vest with side gores, worn open over the polkaki. 5 Apron Four-sided and wider at the bottom, it hangs low so it shows below the belt. It is embroidered and trimmed with ribbons and cord; festive ones were more colourful. 6 Zoni A cone-shaped belt round the hips, made of twisted cords sewn into triangles and zigzags. It goes with the silver buckle, the asimozounaro, the groom's gift to the bride. 7 Kerchief A large folded kerchief, with a silver ornament pinned above the forehead. 8 Sleeves and stockings Separate woollen forearm sleeves, and coloured knitted stockings in two parts. Costume Women’s
Occasion Festive The Sarakatsani were nomadic shepherds and made nearly all their clothes from the wool of their flocks. The women's costume of Thrace, worn on both sides of the Greek–Bulgarian border, is mostly black and white, with geometric patterns in cord. Young women added coloured ribbons and gold braid; older women wore darker, plainer pieces.
