The town dress of the Peloponnese became the official court dress when Queen Amalia took it up after 1837, and it has carried her name since. It joins the local kavadi and zipouni to the line of the European fashion of the time. It was widely worn in Athens and other towns, and in the 19th century it reached the towns of Cyprus too.
