The costume began in Anogeia and was later worn all over Crete; it is also called "sartza", after its apron. Long trousers, like a shalvar, are worn under a long cream shirt that serves as a dress. The red apron worked in gold is tied at the middle and its ends are tucked into a red woven sash.
