1 Kleisto A fitted bodice with narrow long sleeves. The sleeves are black cotton above and red silk brocade with woven flowers below, ending in a tab called the limba. 2 Front of the kleisto Only the front and the lower sleeves are of fine cloth, since only they show. The opening has a line of cord appliqué. 3 Foustani A long garment of fine cloth, open at the front, with long slit sleeves pinned up to show the kleisto's sleeves. It used to be silk brocade; newer ones have black velvet cutwork at the hem. 4 Flokata A heavy black woollen garment to the knee. In Metsovo its only ornament is a red band along the edges and pockets; local tradition says this was a privilege from Ottoman times. 5 Apron A festive satin apron, usually crimson or black, embroidered at the base in coloured silks with flowers and pairs of birds. Others, bought from tailors, have a pleated flounce. 6 Belt A metal belt with a buckle. 7 Tsipa A dark kerchief with ornamented edges. For weddings the hair is braided and wound round the head, with an added ring of false hair and a fez. 8 Fousta The base garment underneath: homespun wool, often plaid, with a sleeveless bodice and a gathered skirt. Not shown on the drawing
Costume Women’s
Occasion Festive The festive costume of the Vlach women of Metsovo, sewn and embroidered by professional tailors. Over the woollen fousta go the kleisto with its rich sleeves, the long foustani and the black woollen flokata with its red band. For weddings the older, more elaborate hair dressing and more jewellery are added.
