1 Kerchiefs A white kerchief over the braided hair and over it a black triangular letzek, its ends crossed under the chin and tied behind. 2 Kamish A white chemise, as across Pontus. The drawers and the shalvar were narrower and shorter here, to the knee. 3 Zipouna To mid-calf, usually of striped silk, with low side slits and buttons at the side. 4 Sparel The chest piece, in festive and bridal wear of koutni, a silk and cotton cloth. Here it was worn over the zipouna, not under it. 5 Tarapoulouz A long multicoloured silk sash of about three metres. 6 Fota An apron with wide stripes in two colours, one always white. The koknetsa, of local deep red wool, was also worn. 7 Saltamarka A short jacket of black European felt, lined with cotton.
Costume Women’s
Occasion Festive In Matsouka, south of Trebizond, the women’s costume was shorter and tighter than in the rest of Pontus. The zipouna, usually of striped silk, reached mid-calf and the shalvar only to the knee. Women wore no tapla: they braided their hair under a white kerchief and tied a black triangular one over it.
