Before the zipka, the men of Pontus wore wide shalvar trousers, which gave this costume its name. Middle-aged and older men had them of local wool or felt, young men of black or dark blue cotton. A black double-breasted waistcoat, a long sash and a crimson fez completed it. From the late 19th century many men in the towns turned to European clothes.
